The wisdom of the body is in each of us...

What is Awareness Through the Body?
Imagine a group of children seated quietly in a circle on the floor, each with a large sheet of newspaper. Silently, they gently smooth out the newspaper, noticing any signs of stress in the paper, perhaps a fold mark, or a small tear. The teacher tells them to crumple the newspaper, then let it go. It expands from a tight ball to a looser one. Then, the children are instructed to smooth the newspaper out, noticing again how it changed in shape, size, texture, orientation. With these sensory landmarks in place, the children make the same shapes with their bodies - first scrunching up tightly, then opened up and smooth. With earnest concentration the children twist and scrunch the newspaper and then twist and scrunch themselves until each is “crumpled” like their newspaper. When everyone is tight and closed the teacher asks them to slowly relax their bodies until they are as smoothed out as their newspaper was in the beginning. |

Awareness Through the Body engages the mind, emotions, and body of students in fun and interesting games and experiences, which makes it a priceless tool for physical educators of all stripes. The activities range from quiet breathing exercises to negotiating an obstacle course as a group – each activity enhancing sensory awareness, kinesthetic sense, and concentration.
The practice of Awareness Through the Body has found profound and practical applications for therapists who do physical, emotional, or spiritual work with children or adults. Counselors, psychotherapists, physical therapists, medical doctors, and chiropractors have trained in ATB to help themselves find balance, insight, and attention, and to help patients in their care.
ATB activities are immediately applicable to most ages, learning styles, and learning abilities. They have been used successfully in and out of the classroom, and in many parts of the world, for more than 20 years. Teachers and parents of autistic and diverse learners are especially receptive to ATB as a way to develop self-regulation and gentle focus.
Athletes have unique needs when it comes to the care of the body. ATB brings each physical system -- musculoskeletal, sensory, cardiovascular, endocrine -- into awareness, giving both athlete and coach a whole new sense of the body, in motion, and at rest. This more integrated kinesthetic sense can help athletes listen better to their bodies to improve technique and performance, and to relax and focus.
